Yangtze River Cableway

Chong Qing, Chongqing Municipality

A cable car crossing the Yangtze River between the Xinhua Road station and Nanan district, in operation since 1987 and now kept running largely as a scenic ride rather than daily commuter transport.

Why visit Yangtze River Cableway?

Chongqing's confusing, cliffside geography made river crossings genuinely difficult before bridges and metro lines multiplied, and this cableway was once a serious piece of transit infrastructure. Today it's the easiest way to get an elevated view over the Yangtze and the city's stacked skyline without paying for a dedicated viewing deck.

How to experience it

The crossing itself takes only a few minutes each way; most visitors ride it round-trip for the view rather than to actually get anywhere. Late afternoon or early evening gives the best light over the river.

Tip

Lines can build up on weekends and holidays. It's a short, low-effort add-on if you're already near Chaotianmen or the Jiefangbei area.
