Gui Lin

Guilin gave Chinese landscape painting its most recognizable subject: the karst limestone peaks that rise abruptly out of flat farmland and river mist have been painted, photographed, and printed on the back of the 20-yuan note for a reason. The classic way to see them is a slow boat down the Li River from Guilin to the town of Yangshuo, a four-to-five-hour cruise past peaks with names like "Nine Horses Fresco Hill" that locals can genuinely pick shapes out of. It's touristy, it's also simply the best way to take in the scenery, since much of it isn't visible from any road.

Yangshuo itself has grown from a backpacker stopover into a proper small-town base, ringed by the same karst peaks and centered on West Street, now a mix of cafes, bars, and bike and kayak rental shops — renting a bicycle and riding the back roads through rice paddies and limestone towers is arguably a better way to experience the landscape at ground level than the cruise is from the water. Inland, the Longji Rice Terraces, carved into steep mountainsides by the local Zhuang and Yao communities over centuries, add a completely different kind of scenery about two hours from Guilin, and Reed Flute Cave offers an easy half-day option for a rainy afternoon.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with a pronounced wet season; April through October covers the warmest, greenest months, though the heaviest rain typically falls from May to July and can raise river levels enough to affect cruise routes. Autumn (September–October) tends to offer the best balance of good weather and manageable river conditions. Three to four days, split between Guilin and Yangshuo, is the standard and sensible way to do it.
