Songzanlin Monastery
Xiang Ge Li La, Yunnan
The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, built in 1679-1681 and modelled directly on Lhasa's Potala Palace.
Why visit Songzanlin Monastery?
Chosen by divination under the Fifth Dalai Lama and rebuilt after Cultural Revolution-era destruction, it's still a functioning centre of worship for Tibetan communities across Yunnan, Sichuan, and beyond — not a museum piece.
How to experience it
Arrive in the morning to see monks in the middle of daily rituals, and budget time to climb toward the upper halls for the full view of the complex.
Tip
The altitude here is significant on top of Shangri-La's own 3,300 metres — pace yourself on the stairs.
