Why visit Marshal Zhang's Mansion?
While the Shenyang Imperial Palace covers the Qing dynasty's founding, this compound covers the messier, more recent chapter of Manchuria's warlord era and the lead-up to Japan's 1931 invasion, centered on one of modern Chinese history's more consequential families. Zhang Xueliang later triggered the Xi'an Incident that forced an alliance between the Nationalists and Communists against Japan — a pivotal event this mansion's exhibits trace back to his early life here.
