Bingou Danxia

Zhang Ye, Gansu

A quieter, more rugged Danxia landform area a short drive from the famous striped Rainbow Mountains, with narrow canyon trails winding through red sandstone formations instead of a single viewing platform.

Why visit Bingou Danxia?

The main Zhangye Danxia National Geopark draws the crowds for its rainbow-colored hillsides viewed from a boardwalk, but Bingou is the same underlying red-sandstone geology shaped instead into canyons, spires, and narrow walkways you actually walk through rather than photograph from a distance. It trades the famous color gradient for a more physical, canyon-hiking experience with a fraction of the visitors.

How to experience it

Trails wind between eroded rock walls and through narrow slot-canyon sections, and the site is large enough to spend two to three hours walking rather than the hour typical of the main geopark's boardwalk loop. It's a separate ticket and entrance from the main Danxia park, roughly a 40-minute drive further out.

Tip

Wear proper walking shoes — unlike the main park's boardwalks, much of Bingou is on uneven natural rock and gravel paths.
