St. Michael's Cathedral
Qing Dao, Shandong
Shandong province's largest Romanesque Revival cathedral, its twin bell towers visible across much of the old German quarter.
Why visit St. Michael's Cathedral?
Completed in 1934 by German architect Alfred Fräbel, it survived closure under Japanese occupation in the 1940s and a long shutdown before reopening to the public in 1992 — one of the few German-era religious buildings still functioning as an active church.
How to experience it
Climb toward the hilltop site for the best exterior view of the twin towers against the surrounding red-tiled rooftops.
Tip
Check ahead for mass times if you want to see the interior — it's a working church, not just a sightseeing stop.
