Orange Isle (Juzizhou)
Chang Sha, Hunan
The world's largest inland river island within a city center, sitting in the Xiang River and anchored by a 32-meter granite sculpture of a young Mao Zedong, completed in 2009.
Why visit Orange Isle (Juzizhou)?
Mao studied and wrote poetry here as a young revolutionary, and the island's park leans into that history without turning solemn — it's as much a public riverside park for locals as a historical site, especially in the evenings.
How to experience it
Walk or rent a bike along the island's length toward the Mao sculpture at its southern tip, and stay for the evening fountain and light show over the river if timing allows.
Tip
The island is long and mostly flat — a bike or the internal shuttle bus covers it far more comfortably than walking the whole thing in summer heat.
