Luoyang Bridge

A stone sea-crossing bridge built in 1053, engineered with an oyster-shell foundation technique and later documented by Marco Polo.
Why visit Luoyang Bridge?
As one of China's earliest large-scale stone sea bridges, it solved a genuine engineering problem — building stable piers on a shifting tidal seabed — using a solution (cultivating oyster beds to bind the stones) that was novel for its time.
How to experience it
Walk the full length of the bridge rather than viewing it from the shore; information panels along the way explain the construction technique.
Tip
It's outside the old city centre, so plan for a taxi or bus rather than working it into a walking route with the other sites.
