Old City Quarter
Quan Zhou, Fujian
The historic core of Quanzhou, where mosques, Taoist shrines, and Buddhist temples sit within a few streets of each other.
Why visit Old City Quarter?
This concentration of different faiths' architecture in one small area is the clearest physical evidence of Quanzhou's medieval role as a genuinely multicultural port, not just a Chinese trading city that happened to deal with foreigners.
How to experience it
Skip a fixed itinerary and walk between Tumen Street, Xi Street, and the temple district — the contrast between buildings is more the point than any single stop.
Tip
Many of the smaller shrines have no English signage — a local guide or a pre-downloaded map with site names in Chinese helps a lot.
