Tianjin's skyline tells two stories at once. Along the Hai River sit the villas and churches of nine former foreign concessions — more than any other Chinese city ever hosted — a legacy of the 1858 Treaty of Tianjin, which forced the port open to British, French, and eventually Japanese, German, Italian, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Belgian control. A short walk away, Ancient Culture Street rebuilds the Qing-dynasty city Tianjin was before any of that happened, centered on the Tianhou Temple and packed with vendors selling clay figurines and paper-cut souvenirs. Few cities compress that much architectural whiplash into a walkable core.

The Five Great Avenues (Wudadao), in the former British concession, is the best-preserved cluster of it all: more than 2,000 villas built through the 1920s and 30s in British, Italian, French, German, and Spanish styles, earning the district a local nickname as an "expo of world architecture." The nearby Italian Style Town, built on the old Italian concession, leans into its origins with piazzas, gelato, and restored villas now doing duty as bars and boutiques. For something newer, the Tianjin Eye — a 120-meter Ferris wheel completed in 2008 and still the only one in the world built directly over a bridge — straddles the Hai River and gives a 30-minute rotating view over both the concession district and the modern skyline growing up around it.

Food is Tianjin's other identity: goubuli baozi (steamed pork buns whose odd name — "the dog doesn't bother" — comes from a nickname for the shop's original, endlessly busy vendor) and mahua, twisted fried dough sold as a portable snack, are both Tianjin inventions now sold nationwide, but taste best from local stalls rather than the touristy flagship stores. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) bring Tianjin's most comfortable weather. Because it's just 30 minutes from Beijing by high-speed rail, Tianjin works well either as a full overnight stay or an ambitious day trip — locals do it routinely — though staying overnight allows time for both the concession-era walks and the riverside night views without rushing.
