A former dye shop turned into the world's first draft bank in 1823, letting merchants transfer money across China without carrying silver. Its unassuming courtyard building is now a museum on the birth of modern Chinese finance.

Most visitors to Pingyao come for the walls and the postcard streets, and walk right past the building that quietly invented remote banking. Rishengchang's network of branches let a merchant deposit silver in Pingyao and withdraw the equivalent in Guangzhou or Beijing weeks later, solving a logistics problem that had constrained Chinese trade for centuries. For a few decades in the 1800s, this small city was effectively the financial capital of the country, and this building is where that system started.
怎么体验
The museum preserves the original vault, ledger rooms, and living quarters much as they would have been, so it reads more like walking through a functioning 19th-century office than a curated exhibit. Signage explains the note system and security measures merchants relied on to trust a piece of paper over actual silver. It's a short visit — 20 to 30 minutes — and works well slotted between the busier city-wall and street sections of Pingyao.
