Li Jiang

Lijiang's Old Town earns its UNESCO listing for a reason that's easy to miss on a crowded evening: the city has no formal grid, no straight main avenue, just a network of canals and cobbled lanes that grew organically alongside the Naxi people's water-management system for 800 years. The canals still carry snowmelt down from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain through the town, and the ability to route or dam sections of them was historically a defensive feature as much as a practical one.

That 5,596-meter mountain dominates the region both visually and logistically — a cable car climbs to a high observation platform for close-up views of the glacier, and the peak itself is considered sacred in Naxi Dongba religion, the animist tradition specific to the Naxi people that also produced their own pictographic writing system, one of the few living pictographic scripts left in the world. Baisha, a much quieter village 8km from the main Old Town, was the original Naxi capital under the Mu kingdom and preserves Ming-dynasty murals and a slower version of the same architecture without the nightly crowds and bar-street noise that now define central Lijiang after dark.

Lijiang functions less as a single destination than as the logistical hub for northwestern Yunnan — Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest river canyons in the world, and Shangri-La are both reachable as day trips or onward stops from here. March–May and September–November offer the clearest mountain views and mildest temperatures; book Old Town accommodation inside a traditional guesthouse rather than a modern hotel to actually experience what the UNESCO listing is protecting.
