Changsha's provincial museum, built around the Mawangdui excavation — Han-dynasty tombs discovered in the early 1970s that yielded silk paintings, lacquerware, and the remarkably preserved body of a noblewoman known as Lady Dai.

Lady Dai's body was so well preserved after over 2,000 years underground that doctors were able to perform a full autopsy on it, making Mawangdui one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century — the museum's silk paintings and lacquerware from the same tombs are equally remarkable and far less well known outside China.

Go straight to the Mawangdui galleries first, as they're the museum's centerpiece and can require timed-entry tickets separate from general admission; the silk textiles and lacquerware collections nearby are easy to miss if you're short on time.
