Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao)

Nan Jing, Jiangsu

A temple and surrounding old quarter along the Qinhuai River, rebuilt after wartime destruction and now the most atmospheric traditional district in central Nanjing, especially after dark.

¿Por qué visitar Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao)?

The temple itself honours Confucius and was historically tied to the imperial examination system — the adjacent Jiangnan Examination Hall once hosted thousands of scholars sitting the exams that determined entry into the imperial bureaucracy. The surrounding streets and riverside, lantern-lit at night, capture a version of old Jiangnan-region China that's mostly disappeared elsewhere.

Cómo disfrutarlo

A short river cruise along the Qinhuai at night, past the lit facades and reflections on the water, is the signature activity — boats leave from docks near the temple. During the day the same streets are busy with shops and snack stalls rather than lanterns, a genuinely different atmosphere worth seeing both ways if time allows.

Consejo

Go once at dusk for the lantern light and river cruise, and if possible once earlier in the day when it's less crowded and the temple itself is easier to actually visit.
