Hanging Temple

大同, 山西

A temple complex built directly into a cliff face roughly 75 metres above Jinxia Gorge, supported by just 27 wooden beams.

为什么要去Hanging Temple?

Built in 491 AD during the late Northern Wei dynasty, it's the only surviving Chinese monastery combining Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian halls in one structure — and its cliffside position has kept it structurally sound for over 1,500 years.

怎么体验

It's about an hour's drive from central Datong; many visitors combine it with the Yungang Grottoes as a full-day trip.

小贴士

The walkways are narrow and the drop is real — not recommended for visitors uneasy with heights, and access can close temporarily in bad weather.
