关于Hong Kong

Hong Kong runs on its own passport, currency, legal system, and rhythm — a reminder that "China" isn't one thing, and that this former British colony, handed back in 1997, still operates under a genuinely different set of rules from the mainland. That shows up everywhere in daily life: English is widely spoken, the MTR subway is among the most efficient in the world, and the food culture blends Cantonese tradition with a century and a half of outside influence, from cha chaan teng diners serving milk tea and pineapple buns to some of the most refined dim sum anywhere.

The city's geography does a lot of the work for visitors. Victoria Peak, reached by a funicular tram running since 1888, gives the single best skyline view in Asia, looking down over Victoria Harbour with Kowloon on the far side. But Hong Kong is also, unexpectedly, a hiking destination — roughly three-quarters of its land area is undeveloped country park, and trails like the Dragon's Back are a twenty-minute bus ride from skyscrapers. At night, Temple Street Night Market in Kowloon covers the other end of the spectrum: street food, fortune tellers, and stalls selling everything from watches to jade, open until close to midnight.

Hong Kong's climate is subtropical with a distinct wet, hot summer (June through September, with real typhoon risk) and a cooler, drier winter. October through December is the most reliable window — low humidity, mild temperatures, blue skies — with March and April a reasonable secondary option before the summer heat and rain set in. Three days covers the core sights, though anyone interested in hiking or the outlying islands (Lamma and Cheung Chau are both easy ferry rides) should budget a fourth.
