In 1980, Shenzhen was a fishing town of roughly 30,000 people; today it's home to more than 13 million. When Deng Xiaoping designated it China's first Special Economic Zone that August, the idea was to test market reforms in a contained space next to Hong Kong — the experiment worked so completely that "Shenzhen speed" became shorthand across China for how fast a place can build itself from almost nothing. There's no old town at the center of it, no imperial-era monument to anchor a visit, because there wasn't much of a city here forty-five years ago.

What replaced the fishing village is one of the most concentrated tech corridors on the planet — Tencent, Huawei, and DJI are all headquartered within the city limits, and the density of hardware manufacturing and startups nearby has earned Shenzhen the nickname "Silicon Valley of hardware." That industrial energy hasn't crowded out everything else: OCT Loft, a former factory complex converted into a gallery and design-studio district, and Dafen Oil Painting Village, a neighborhood that has supplied a large share of the world's hand-painted reproduction art since the 1980s, both show a design and arts scene that grew up alongside the tech boom rather than in spite of it. Shenzhen Bay Park, a long waterfront greenway built around protected mangrove wetlands, gives the city one of its few unhurried corners, with the hills of Hong Kong's New Territories visible across the water.

Shenzhen isn't built around a checklist of historic sights — it's worth visiting because it's the fastest, clearest place in China to see what four decades of unprecedented urban growth actually looks like up close, and because it sits close enough to Hong Kong (about an hour by cross-border train) to make a sharp, natural pairing with a very different kind of city. October through April, outside the humid, sticky summer months, is the most comfortable stretch for exploring on foot.
