Wuzhen
Wuzhen's canals and stone bridges have been part of daily life here for roughly 1,300 years, and the town's defining feature — compared to China's many other restored 'ancient towns' — is that it still functions as one instead of existing purely for visitors. Tofu presses, rice-wine cellars, and indigo dyeing racks operate in the same buildings and using largely the same methods their owners' families have used for generations, not as historical reenactment but as an ongoing local economy that happens to also be photogenic.
That lived-in quality sits in a genuinely strange contrast with Wuzhen's other identity: since 2014, the town has hosted the World Internet Conference, an annual gathering of Chinese tech executives and global internet-policy figures, held in a purpose-built conference complex within walking distance of the same 1,300-year-old canals. The Mu Xin Art Museum, a minimalist concrete-and-glass building at the edge of the West Scenic Zone, adds a third layer — dedicated to Wuzhen-born writer and painter Mu Xin, who survived years of imprisonment and exile during the Cultural Revolution before gaining wide recognition late in life, the museum's stark modern architecture deliberately breaks from the canal town's traditional aesthetic around it.
Wuzhen is split into an East and West Scenic Zone, both requiring separate paid entry, with the West Zone generally considered more atmospheric and better preserved for an overnight stay inside the old buildings. March–June and September–November bring the most comfortable weather; evenings, when the day-trip crowds thin out and the red lanterns reflect on the canal water, are when the town's atmosphere is most distinct from photos taken at midday.
